WoPAI Intervenes at Human Rights Council Session

Jun 27, 2025

At the 59th session of the Human Rights Council (16 June to 9 July 2025), Special Rapporteur on violence against women & girls Reem Alsalem presented her Sex Based Violence Report.

“Erasing women and women-specific language and needs based on their sex is not only wrong, but also demeaning, regressive and constitutes one of the worst forms of violence that women and girls can experience.”, Alsalem told the UN HRC in her presentation.

In support of Alsalem, WoPAI attended via video to deliver an oral intervention, represented by WoPAI’s newly appointed Board Member, Tanja Olsson Blandy. Alsalem’s report embodies what many UN structures fail to do, and is an impartial and objective overview, rooted in international laws of human rights. WoPAI sent a firm message to the Council, Alsalem’s report provides clear evidence of the multidimensional violence women and girls face, solely because we are born female.

“Today, the world lacks 150 million women and girls. Not because of how they identified. They are missing as a consequence of been born female.”
