WoPAI has drawn up a joint letter, co-signed by more than 100 civil society organizations, addressed to Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women. In the letter we express our concern over the exclusion of pornography from UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism campaign on digital violence against women.
We call on UN Women to adopt a comprehensive approach to all forms of violence against women and girls online — regardless of whether such violence generates profit or not. We urge UN Women to adopt a definition that recognises all pornography as a form of violence against women and girls. We also urge UN Women to re-align with international human rights standards for women and girls, and with the evidence-based analysis developed by the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalem, in her recent reports.
